Two-Stage Renovation, Balancing Design and Everyday Living

Design Intent
This project was completed in two design stages. Originally intended as an internal renovation only, the project was redesigned several years later to incorporate a new rear open-plan living area, a covered central deck to introduce additional natural light, and a rear deck that descends to the natural ground level and pool area. The project also underwent a further upgrade to the internal fittings and fixtures.

Challenges
Due to site allotment constraints, the project was located within a particularly challenging flood overlay, requiring a specific height to be maintained between the natural ground level and the finished floor level. Limiting the overall bulk of the build while complying with the required floor heights, as well as transitioning from the elevated deck to the lawn and pool area below, proved difficult. Additionally, designing a compliant, non-climbable pool fence that integrated seamlessly with the deck — without making the space feel enclosed or oppressive — presented another significant challenge.

Outcomes
Careful material selection, combined with an open pergola structure, reduced the build’s perceived visual bulk and overall height. The new open-plan living area, featuring north-facing glazing, resulted in a light-filled home with a strong connection between the interior and exterior spaces, despite the level changes required between the deck and lawn areas.
